A bra made of 24-Karat GOLD? Empress-inspired lingerie at $6,000 per set really is fit for royalty!

A luxury lingerie brand has produced a collection of undergarments made from 24-Karat gold thread.

Rococo Dessous, made by former Victoria's Secret designer Breanna Lee, features gilded bras, underwear and nightgowns that all incorporate the thread, which comes from a special Swiss gold fabric.

The lavish collection, which takes its inspiration from royal women in history including Cleopatra, Marie Antoinette and Tsarina Alexandra, ranges in price from $3,000 to $6,000 for a set.

Each of the lingerie sets bears the name of the woman who inspired it.

The Marie Antoinette pieces, for example, come in an all-gold set and a black-on gold set, both with elaborate floral detailing made with the opulent thread.

And while the idea of wearing 24-Karat gold clothes may be a novelty today, the Rococo Dessous website notes that it was one of the most precious clothing materials for Kings, Queens and Pharoahs in history.

'The desire for gold fashion was born in the world's first grand civilization in Egypt, where Tutankhamun wore linens embroidered with the precious metal,' explains the website.

The extravagant items can only be purchased by private appointment in select boutiques; however the company's sales director, Ilknur Salaun, told the Wall Street Journal that each set ranges in price from $3,000 for gold-on-black lingerie sets, to $6,000 for gold-on--gold ones.

And the items can even be further embellished with jewels and pearls, for an extra fee.

Indeed, some of the pieces that were shown at Rococo Dessous's debut U.S. fashion show in New York on Wednesday were studded with Swarovski crystals.

Despite their opulent materials, however, these items can be washed - delicately, of course.

They're also designed so that the gold doesn't touch the wearer's skin 'too closely', said Ms Lee, who added that she had tried on the lingerie herself and found it to be 'comfortable'.

One would assume that the biggest snag in Rococo Dessous's business plan would be a shortage of women who can afford the opulent underwear.

But according to the Wall Street Journal, there has already been a strong response from customers all over the world - especially in the South of France, the Middle East and Russia.
